Getting more stuff done

Keeping up with the fast paced environment of a 21st century knowledge worker is a real challenge. Minor tasks, like scheduling appointments and booking flights, can slow you down a lot and prevent you from maximizing your use of time. Usually the solution to this is to hire a personal assistant. Now, there’s an app for that!

StuffTM – Personal Assistant is a virtual assistant app. You pay a monthly subscription of $50 which gives you access to unlimited tasks. There is in theory no restrictions on what these tasks can be, as long as they can be reasonably completed in an hour or two. Things like booking flights, scheduling doctor’s appointments, ordering flowers for Mother’s Day. Those sorts of menial tasks can be handed off to the Stuff team.

All communication is done through the app, either via voice or text. Stuff is team based, so you will likely work with different people each time you use the service. The app has good design and is easy to navigate. The main screen shows you the status of all your outstanding tasks from beginning to end.

Stuff is certainly cheaper than hiring an actual personal assistant. Its subscription based model and guarantee of infinite tasks is really impressive. If you make extensive use of the services, Stuff can easily pay for itself in terms of saved time.

That being said, there are definitely some major kinks that need to be worked out. The app has become more popular in the last month or so, and there have been technical and service issues as a result of onboarding so many new people.

There are also some things that you would expect a personal assistant to do, that your chief of Stuff simply does not. For instance, while they can set up a doctor’s appointment, they can’t call to cancel. Limitations like this can end up making the scheduling process more of a hassle than it would have been if you had just done everything yourself in the first place.

Bottom line is that while you should definitely be aware of the drawbacks, Stuff can still be a useful tool to have in your arsenal if you find yourself losing a lot of time on menial tasks. It may also be worth revisiting later on, once the platform is more stable and the service more clearly delineated.

StuffTM – Personal Assistant is available on Google Play and the App Store.
